There has been a lot of talk here on MYDD about a media bias towards Obama. In light of the recent events and coming events I think it is time to put that theory to rest. Hillary appeared on SNL last night and the Daily Show will have her on Monday night.
The timing of both of these appearances (and the Tina Fey commentary last week,) are all clearly designed to help Clinton turn things around ahead of Tuesday's Primaries in Ohio, Texas, Vermont, and Rhode Island. Now, this is great strategy from Clinton's campaign (which is a bit surprising since they have appeared, on occasion, completely tone death.) If Clinton eventually wins the nomination I would say that it will be in spite of her high level advisors rather than because of them.
What gets me most though is not that this is a series if brilliant moves by Clinton and her campaign. It is that for all of the talk about a Media bias towards Obama (including being skewered for it by SNL,) she is now being bailed out by two segments of the popular media.
I know what some of you are thinking. You are thinking "SNL and the Daily Show aren't the media, they are entertainment you <insert expletive here!>" But I would point out that these two shows are incredibly popular, particularly with younger viewers, that the Daily Show at least aspires to semi-serious discussions with its guests, and that relatively high percentages of young viewers get their news from the Daily Show (and probably from Weekend Update as well.)
Now, I have a personal opinion about all of this, particularly the fact that the Daily Show is willing to have either candidate on Monday night, but my point here is that these shows are both owned by media companies that have been continually skewered as being "too Pro-Obama."
So, can we put this talk to bed and at least admit that there are biases for both candidates throughout the media and at this critical juncture in the campaign those who want to see a Clinton win (or at the very least the campaign to continue,) have picked now to make a play for the voters (one that I bleieve might be successful.)
